Some Things You Should Know When Transitioning Your MobileMe account to iCloud

by on July 8, 2012

For all you Apple users of older software and hardware, there are some things that you should know when transitioning from the now defunct MobileMe to iCloud. Ever since Apple announced that they would no longer be supporting MobileMe effective June 30, 2012 there has been a flurry of activity centered on how to migrate from the older version to the newer version. For starters, you need to know that switching your primary email account is indeed daunting especially when you have to announce to the world that your old email id no longer works. For many of you banking on the fact that the transition has been put off a bit longer because of the fact that you can still access your mail from the older software, you also need to know that you need higher versions of the Mac OS to do this. However, Apple has come to your rescue for a wee bit longer because of the addition of a transition option that lets you keep the old MobileMe or .Mac address.iCloud

Next, the task of exporting your address books bookmarks and the contacts have to be done according to a predetermined procedure that Apple has introduced for MobileMe users. You need to export all these tabs to a HTML file and then creating an iCal archive can now be done relatively easier by using the tools available in your older MobileMe configuration. Once the export is done, it flows from the next step that importing the contacts becomes a lot simpler. And what more! You can keep these contacts ready for any future versions just in case. Since Mac users swear by the ease of use that Apple is known for, then can take comfort in the fact that exporting and importing of contacts and bookmarks can be done in a few clicks.

The third aspect to the transition is the ability of syncing your data across devices. For older software users, you need to keep in mind that this is a bit complicated than the previous aspect. This is because the iDisk is no longer being supported and hence a complete data backup and recovery is the only solution. The point that you need to understand is that manually copy might not work not only because it is time consuming but also due to the fact that there can be compatibility issues if you do not go through the syncing option given by Apple. Indeed, the best way out of the quagmire would be to make full use of the syncing option that is provided by Apple and then migrate to iCloud by using the tools made available by Apple.

Finally, you might be wondering about all the photos and media files that you would have stored on your MobileMe galleries. Worry not as Apple has made provision for an easy data backup and recovery for this aspect as well. You can download your MobileMe galleries and then backup it up using the transfer option to the iCloud. In case you are wondering about investing in new software and hardware, remember that is only for the email bit as the rest of the features can be ported and migrated to the iCloud without much difficulty. Of course, you need to spend a few hours (or longer depending on the amount of data to be migrated). But, once you have done so, you can rest assured that the iCloud is much improved and better than your iDisk and hence can be used with greater efficiency.
