More than likely you got a lot of SMS by people you don’t know and are completely hung-over but on the other side you’re full of great New Year’s resolutions: quit smoking (yeah, you bet), get a gym membership (or at least make use of your existing one) or finally stick to your diet plan.
These are all great resolutions, but I can tell you what should be the first item on your list which is instantly achievable: get a backup plan to store all the precious data you have.
Why? Okay, here we go: Imagine you lost that great of a party shot.
These are unforgettable memories with your friends and family. Most likely you have stored all your photos and video on one hard drive. But hard drives tend to fail very often. If you have never experienced data loss then you were very lucky. It is a painful experience that I wish to nobody. The good thing is, you can avoid data loss for as low as $5 per month.
Get an online backup provider now!
The worst enemy for your data is procrastination. Tomorrow I’ll do the backup! And then it is too late. So whatever your New Year’s resolutions are, do a backup first. If you don’t know how to choose an online backup service just read some of my articles. There you find plenty of advice. Also, do check out my top 10 list of online backup services.
Get yourself a backup strategy
A backup strategy is very important. You have to know if it is enough for you to rely on one single backup solution. I do like to have 2 kinds of backup. One local backup and one off-site backup. This way I can be sure that if one strategy fails I always have a fallback. The local backup can be done on an external hard drive. On the Mac the best way is to use the Time Machine feature. With Time Machine you can just schedule your backups on a monthly, weekly or daily basis making sure that your data is always safe.
Most of the New Year’s resolutions are long-term goals. Getting an online backup in place is also a long-term solution but you can start with it right now and forget about it. Unlike going to the gym, you don’t need constant motivation for data security and safety. As somebody who has lost all his data couple of years ago I know how painful it is to lose everything that is important to you. Don’t let’s this false sense of security fool you.
Happy New Year!
