The latest move of Carbonite, Inc. to offer backup NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices through Carbonite Business – is being perceived as a great support measure and a welcome step by consumers and SMBs (small and medium sized businesses) alike.

Carbonite Inc. with subscribers across more than 100 countries is widely acknowledged as a frontline provider of online backup solutions for consumers and SMBs. Difficult to believe, but the fact remains that Carbonite has so far backed up a whopping 200 billion files, retrieved more than 7 billion files and is presently backing up in excess of 300 million files on a daily basis.

This latest development has understandably brought tremendous relief to SMBs as their on-site backup solution will be further bolstered due to the additional back up support by Carbonite’s secure off site data centers. This will obviously mean added data protection and data redundancy.

It is interesting to note that more than 20 percent of SMBs (having a population of 6-30 computers) are availing a NAS device to back up their data onsite.

The latest NAS backup as announced by Carbonite Business will enable SMBs to effortlessly back up the contents of these devices to the cloud. This is to say, any information saved on the NAS will be straightaway protected in the cloud.

The major advantage is users can access their key data from the cloud from any internet-connected device regardless of their location or even if they are traveling.Hello Han in Carbonite

Peter Lamson, Senior Vice President of Small Business for Carbonite remarked “The new NAS backup functionality delivers on Carbonite’s ability to simplify back up for our small business customers and demonstrates our commitment to adding new features that best meet our customers’ needs.”

The key features of this latest NAS backup functionality to SMBs are:

  • External hard drive backup will enable adding files and folders saved on any external drive to their online backup.
  • There is the web-based administrative dashboard that can be accessed from any computer with Internet connection. This will facilitate checking the backup status for multiple computers and exercise control over backup storage level.
  • Availing Carbonite BusinessPremier, users can back up servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2011.
  • Users can access their backed up files from any web browser or smartphone or tablet.

This latest NAS backup functionality is available in both Carbonite Business and Carbonite BusinessPremier.

The pricing is reasonable at $229 per annum for an indefinite number of computers with 250GB of storage. Carbonite BusinessPremier also offers backs up for an unlimited number of computers and servers with 500GB of storage. Users can opt for extra storage packs if the need arises.

Final verdict

Without a doubt, Carbonite has a very strong stance in the online backup world. With its unlimited online storage and mobile accessibility, it is an ideal primary backup solution. Obviously it is not perfect: support could be better and they tend to throttle upload speed. But Carbonite offers a free trial – so you may test that for yourself and see if it fits your needs.
