Megaupload was forced to pull down shutters because of its illegal file hosting. Megupload was indeed a widely appreciated site as people could with effortless ease download/ upload and share whatever materials they fancied. Megupload site was extremely user-friendly and did not carry a swarm of ads like most other file-sharing sites.
However unfortunate the demise of Megaupload may be, there is no need to ring the alarm bells as there are several equally worthy file sharing alternative sites. Many may consider Rapidshare as an appropriate free web hosting alternative – though this opinion is questionable.
MediaFire: – The site enables the user to drag and drop file that you wish to upload and the sharing of files is also easy. Unlike other file-sharing sites there is no need for registration. While the advantage is the site offers free file storage sans limits, the disadvantage is the user is barred from uploading file larger than 200 MB in one go.
RapidShare – The most attractive feature of RapidShare is it lets you upload/ download large size files even on free account. But to upload files, the condition is you will have to register. But once registered, you can share files regardless of their size and you will be provided a short URL for this purpose.
YouSendIt:- This site offers 2GB of storage facility even for free users, though the restrictions are each file has to be 50MB or smaller and not more than five uploaded files can be shared in a month. Paid users however can share unlimited files as also enjoy unlimited storage space. The site boasts of 20 million registered users spread across 193 countries.
Dropbox – This site is no doubt steadily gaining in popularity and as a user, you can simply drag-and-drop unrestricted number of files. But to avail the benefits, you will have to download and install dropbox software – though many admit it is worth doing it. The unique feature of this site is it offers synchronizing between PC to web.
Oron: – The site allows free users to upload files up to 400MBwith a restriction of five files at one time. But the uploaded files, capable of being shared through link, are retained only for a brief time and the speed of upload is also time-consuming for free users. Paid users understandably are offer better sharing and storage facilities.
Box: This site is basically a cloud storage service and not a direct file-sharing service. Free users are offered 5GB and they can either share through a direct link to a file or can ask users to view an entire folder via email. Free users will be permitted to upload files 25MB or smaller
Apart from the file sharing sites listed above, there are host of well-known and reliable sites including SendSpace, WUpload, Fileserve, HotFile, Minus, Deposit files, Amazon Cloud Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, SugarSync etc. Each of these sites has its own merits and limitations and you should visit their respective websites for full particulars to make an informed choice.
